Hamlin, Jordan to field 2021 Cup team by Shirleen Riffe
September 22, 2020 North Myrtle Beach, SC. Well there it is. After a day that brought news that the seat of the 2021 Chip Ganassi Racing 42 would be filled by long suffering Ross Chastain, we assumed that would be the big news of the week.
Not to be out done, Denny Hamlin, along with former NBA player and mega star Michael Jordan have purchased the charter from Germain Racing who will close operations at the end of this season.
Jordan and Hamlin have lined up current
Richard Petty Motorsports driver, Bubba Wallace to pilot their entry in 2021. Wallace has been an outspoken champion of the Black Lives Matter initiative and is currently the only black driver at the Cup level in NASCAR.
Hamlin and Jordan have been friends for years so the pairing is not unexpected. Jordan has been a huge NASCAR fan since a child growing up in North Carolina.
Hamlin is proving himself to be quite the multi-taker as he is a serious contender for the Cup Playoff Championship even though he has probably spent a good deal of time in business meetings and planning for this major undertaking.
Jordan becomes the first black full time principal team owner since Wendell Scott owned and drove his own car in the 1960's and 1970's.
"I see this as a chance to educate a new audience and open more opportunities for black people in racing." Jordan said.
Fans can look forward to a new team in NASCAR in 2021 which will surely be a treat after the dismal fan experience spurred by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
